BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks continued their upward trend Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index closing at 2,905.56 points, up 1.61 percent.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.63 percent higher at 9,465.8 points.
Total turnover on the two stock exchanges stood at 492.85 billion yuan (72.59 billion U.S. dollars), up from 411 billion yuan the previous trading day.
The cement and papermaking industries saw a strong surge. Tangshan Jidong Cement went up 9.98 percent to close at 11.13 yuan. Shenwu Energy Saving surged by the daily limit of 10 percent to finish at 9.23 yuan.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, was up 0.53 percent to close at 1,629.61 points Tuesday.
