BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed lower Thursday, with the iron and steel industry leading the decline.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.23 percent to close at 2,645.43 points, while the Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.18 percent lower at 7,893.99 points.
Combined turnover on the two bourses stood at 305.3 billion yuan (about 44.25 billion U.S. dollars), down from 347.2 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Iron and steel industries were among the biggest losers Thursday, with the sub-index down 1.08 percent. Shares of Jiangsu Shagang Co., Ltd dropped by the daily limit of 10 percent to 11.41 yuan apiece, while shares of Shanghai Hongda Mining Co., Ltd slumped 6.04 percent to end at 5.6 yuan per share.
Shares of shipbuilding firms experienced a gaining trend, with a sub-index increase of 1.44 percent. China CSSC Holdings Limited shares climbed 3.98 percent to 13.07 yuan a share.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 0.67 percent to close at 1,353.92 points.
