BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed mixed Tuesday with the environmental protection sector leading the decline.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index edged down 0.1 percent to close at 2,777.98 points. The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.06 percent higher at 8,733.75 points.
Trading remained thin, with the combined turnover on the two bourses standing at 291.4 billion yuan (about 42.7 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 323.3 billion yuan the previous trading day.
The environmental protection sector led the decline with the sub-index losing 0.91 percent.
Fujian Longma Environmental Sanitation Equipment lost by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 17.8 yuan per share.
The nonferrous metal sector registered strong growth. The Aluminum Corporation of China gained 4.26 percent to end at 4.16 yuan a share.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board, lost 0.02 percent to close at 1,493.11.
